Division of Nuclear and Plasma Physics (DNPP)

This division includes nuclear science and engineering related to radiation detection, monitoring, radiation effects, nuclear biomedicine, and industrial applications. Moreover, plasma is an ionized-quasineutral state of matter that exhibits collective behavior and can exist at diverse conditions, e.g., much below room temperatures to above the temperature at the core of the Sun. Although its occurrence on Earth is only during lightning and in laboratory experiments, more than 99% of visible matter in the universe exists in the plasma state. It is of interest, as it has found applications in diverse areas such as agriculture, controlled thermonuclear fusion, electronics, gas lasers, lightning, medicine, pollution control, space science, etc.
